Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
The solution to fiber exhaust?
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is the latest solution that promises to revolutionise technology and aid in resolving the fiber exhaust problem. Essentially it is an optical multiplexing technology used to increase bandwidth over existing fiber Networks. This means that billions of bits can be delivered in a single second via optical fibre.
DWDM puts data from different sources together on a single optical fibre, with each piece of data being placed on its own individual wavelength. By using this method of delivery 80, or more, separate wavelengths of data can be created and submitted on a single optical fibre.
At the end of transmission each piece of data is transferred back to its original source, meaning that different data formats regardless of the rate that they are being transmitted at, can be transmitted together in one package.
The future is DWDM - it is expected to be the central technology of all-optical Networks in the future.
What are the benefits to business?
Cost savings are the key benefits to business of implementing DWDM. By enabling data to be sent down a singular fibre, regardless of original source and type, it means that fibre Networks can carry more data than ever at one time and keep usage costs down whilst doing so.
Providing increased scalability and reach, DWDM can enable wide reaching connectivity that is currently not available or feasible for many businesses. With quicker and easier reach enabled by the technology businesses can have access to a reliable, fast means of transporting data between offices across the globe.
By using existing fibre Networks too, DWDM avoids any further costs relating to the installation of a new Network or cabling, and avoids the associated lengthy installation processes.
How can Exponential-e assist?
We have deployed a multi-terabit optical transport network across our UK Data Centres, and can therefore offer DWDM at the highest carrier-class standards. The technology that we have implemented provides space and power saving, flexibility and support to multiple client interfaces.
This service is available to customers with 10Gb, 40Gb and 100Gb wavelength based services, and enables easier operations and faster time to market for your customers.
We are also able to provide the delivery of true optical SLAs to customers, through the use of our intelligent wavelength tracker layer management. This ensures that we can continue to provide high levels of service and delivery as we currently do across our product range in its entirety.
